These replacement notes are printed just like normal notes, except there is a star printed in the serial number. For the current printing systems used by the BEP, the maximum run size for star notes is 3.2 million notes (100,000 32-note sheets).Star notes get their rarity from the quantity printed and released into circulation.
Generally, collectors consider runs of 640,000 notes or less to be rare. This is determined by the number range that the star notes serial number fits into. On Legal Tender notes and Silver Certificates, the star is where the prefix normally is (the first letter of the serial number). Any twenty dollar bill that has a serial number that begins or ends with a star symbol has a chance to be valuable. To qualify as a low number, the serial number should have six or seven leading zeros. Some collectors specialize in low serial numbered twenty dollar bills. Small size twenty dollar bills were printed as Federal Reserve notes, gold certificates, national bank notes, Federal Reserve bank notes, and special issue Hawaii notes.
